HAPPY WORLD FOOD DAY!

HAPPY WORLD FOOD DAY!

World Food Day is an internationally celebrated day on 16 October, in honour of the foundation date of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. There are different themes each year and 2020’s theme is “Grow, Nourish, Sustain. Together.”

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)

FAO is an international organization of the United Nations that fights to end hunger globally. It is goal is to achieve food security and access to adequate high-quality food. It has various international projects regarding sustainability, local sources, agriculture, environment and animals.

The objective of World Food Day is to create awareness regarding the topics surrounding hunger, obesity and malnourishment. The member states of FAO organize and hold various events and organisations to celebrate World Food Day and raise awareness.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, events will be held over Zoom this year. Yet, there are great toolkits to spread awareness and celebrate this day.

You can watch the promo video of 2020 here.

This year main event will include the messages and calls to actions of Pope Francis, the President of the Republic of Italy and the UN Secretary-General regarding the COVID-19 and the access to safe, healthy and nutritious food. You can attend the webinar and webcast on 16th October here.

Who Are the Food Heroes?

There is always someone behind our food, who produces, distributes, sells, provides or cooks! Especially during the COVID-19 Pandemic, we have seen globally the importance of the front-line workers. So, this year the FAO celebrates the #FoodHeroes, who help to grow, nourish and sustain our world regardless of the circumstances.

So, What Can You Do to Support and Participate In?

Even if you are just a consumer, you still have a lot to support the objectives of the FAO. According to the FAO, these are the first simple steps that you can take:

– Choose a healthy and diverse diet

– Promote healthy eating and buying habits

– Choose local sources

– Choose seasonal options

– Grow food at home, if you have space

– Respect food and food heroes and don’t waste food

– Participate as a volunteer in various opportunities

In order to help you to start taking action, we would like to introduce you some of the initiatives that we support in the UK!

Too Good To Go

According to the website of Too Good To Go 1/3 of food is wasted. Too Good To Go has an initiated a movement to prevent the food waste; by providing the surplus food and not throwing away! So, you will order from the participating business and you will not know exactly what’s in your order until you pick it up! But you will purchase with great prices and help the environment by not wasting food!

Olio

Olio connects local people and business so that any surplus food can be shared, not thrown away! It can be any food, of which sell-by date is near or any extra groceries that you have at home. It even doesn’t have to be food; it can also be used for any non-food household items laying around!

We believe that we can make changes with these kinds of initiatives, it doesn’t have to a big change. Any change starts with one small action!
